The latest Swachh Vayu awards assessed 130 cities through city self-assessment, state approval, Central Pollution Control Board evaluation and independent field verification.
The Environment Ministry says 108 cities reduced annual PM10 concentrations compared with 2017-18. It reports that 72 cut levels by more than 20%, 26 by more than 40% and 14 met national ambient-air standards. Performance-linked grants totalled about Rs 16,425 crore.
Why it matters
Air quality affects health and productivity, while outcome-linked funding is intended to make city action measurable. Credible comparison can help identify which interventions transfer across cities.
