Community water programme reports more than 1.58 crore recharge structures
The cumulative official count follows two phases of Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari and integration with the Catch the Rain campaign.
The government says Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari produced more than 27 lakh water structures in its first phase by May 2025 and more than 1.5 crore recharge structures in its second phase by May 2026.
After integration with the Catch the Rain campaign, the reported cumulative total exceeded 1.58 crore artificial groundwater-recharge structures by 3 September 2026.
Why it matters
Distributed recharge infrastructure can support water security when structures are correctly located, functional and maintained. Large construction counts also create a significant need for consistent mapping and outcome measurement.

Evaluation should move from construction counts to recharge performance, groundwater response, functionality, maintenance and basin-level suitability. Geospatial records and periodic field checks are central to a credible operating view.

The release reports cumulative official counts but no independent validation, functionality rate, geospatial distribution or quantified groundwater impact.
