India and Sri Lanka deepen defence ties through bridges and equipment cooperation
The bilateral package includes three Bailey bridges, plans to upgrade six air-defence guns and new links between training institutions.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh met Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake in Colombo on 9 September as the two countries announced a package of practical defence cooperation.
The two sides virtually inaugurated three Bailey bridges built by Indian defence forces and exchanged memoranda on upgrading six L70 guns for the Sri Lankan Air Force under an Indian grant and on cooperation between their NCC and National Defence College institutions. Sri Lanka reiterated that its territory would not be used against India's interests.
Why it matters
The package connects infrastructure support, military training and equipment cooperation within a strategically important Indian Ocean relationship.
