India launches its first domestically built ocean research vessel
Sagar Manthan is designed for geophysical, seismic and multibeam surveys and research at depths of up to six kilometres.
Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers has launched the ocean research vessel Sagar Manthan at its Rishi Bankim Chandra shipyard in Kolkata.
The 89.5-metre vessel is being built for the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research under the Deep Ocean Mission. Its stated specifications include gross tonnage of 5,900, maximum speed of 14 knots and systems for geophysical, seismic and multibeam surveys at depths of up to six kilometres.
Why it matters
Domestic research-vessel capacity can reduce dependence on chartered platforms and widen India's ability to study deep-ocean geology, biodiversity and resources.
