India intensifies lumpy-skin-disease controls with 3,461 active cases reported

States have been advised to increase vaccination, movement controls, isolation, vector control and quarantine for cattle.

By SCULTRA Services Editorial DeskPublished Updated

The Animal Husbandry Department says more than 36.18 crore cattle vaccinations or re-vaccinations have been completed and 3,461 active lumpy skin disease cases remain, mainly among young and unvaccinated animals.

States and Union Territories have been advised to vaccinate young cattle and heifers, use ring vaccination, restrict animal movement, isolate cases, control vectors, disinfect premises, manage stray animals and quarantine new arrivals.

Why it matters

Lumpy skin disease can harm cattle health, reduce dairy productivity and impose losses on farmers. Movement and vaccination measures also affect livestock markets.

SCULTRA point of view

National totals should be supported by state and district denominators, new-case trends, vaccination coverage, deaths, milk-loss estimates and vaccine-effectiveness data so the control assessment can be tested.

Limitations

The active-case and vaccination figures are official aggregates without a published denominator, state table, time series or independent audit. Risk forecasts are not confirmed cases.
