Seven proposals enter the first round of India's coal-gasification scheme
The Rs 37,500 crore programme has drawn applications spanning urea, synthetic natural gas, syngas and direct-reduced iron projects.
The Coal Ministry says the first application round for its surface coal and lignite gasification scheme received seven proposals across fertiliser, gas and industrial uses.
The applicants include Adani Enterprises for three urea projects, Gallantt Ispat for direct-reduced iron and syngas, NTPC for synthetic natural gas, Shyam Sel & Power for syngas and Talcher Fertilisers for urea. The Rs 37,500 crore scheme targets 75 million tonnes of capacity toward a national goal of 100 million tonnes by 2030. A second application round opened on 8 September.
Why it matters
Projects that reach operation could affect fertiliser feedstock, gas imports, industrial investment and coal demand. Their wider value will depend on project economics and environmental performance, not application volume alone.

The application list is the beginning of the evaluation path. The useful scorecard will track awards, financial close, environmental approvals, water use, carbon intensity, construction progress and actual output for each project.
Limitations
Applications are not approved projects or committed investment. Import-substitution and environmental-benefit statements are government estimates that require lifecycle and project-level evidence.
