Himalayan states review readiness for glacial floods and avalanches

The Union Home Secretary has reviewed preparedness for glacial-lake outburst floods and avalanches with Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir.
The discussion also involved national agencies responsible for disaster management, water, weather and snow research, with attention to lake monitoring, warning dissemination, evacuation planning and local response readiness.
Why it matters
Glacial floods and avalanches can move quickly and disrupt mountain communities, roads, power assets and other critical infrastructure. Effective response depends on connecting scientific monitoring with local decisions before an event escalates.

The operating test is whether monitoring produces timely, understandable alerts, rehearsed evacuation, redundant communications and infrastructure decisions that reflect local hazard maps and response constraints.
