Forest-rights review examines a million-plus pending claims and linked records
A regional implementation review examined pending claims, community rights and plans to connect state records with a national portal.
The Tribal Affairs Ministry has held its first regional Forest Rights Act implementation review with Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Telangana.
PIB reports that more than 54 lakh individual claims had been filed nationally by 30 June 2026, with about 25.42 lakh titles covering nearly 238 lakh acres. More than 10 lakh claims were pending, while 19,845 community forest rights had been recognised. Officials also discussed a national portal under development and API-based integration of state records.
Why it matters
The speed and accuracy of rights recognition affect tenure security, livelihoods, forest governance and access to public programmes.

Digitisation can improve visibility and coordination, but it must support due process, community participation and defensible records rather than substitute for fair claim resolution.
Limitations
The national totals are government-reported and the release does not provide a reconciled state-by-state quality audit. A pending claim does not establish eligibility or an administrative error.
