High-level committee begins work on India's aircraft-leasing ecosystem

The first meeting brought aviation, financial and regulatory institutions together to examine domestic aircraft leasing and financing.

By SCULTRA Services Editorial DeskPublished Updated

The civil aviation minister has chaired the first meeting of a high-level committee formed to support the development of aircraft leasing and financing in India.

Participants included representatives from aviation, finance and commerce ministries, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, Reserve Bank of India, International Financial Services Centres Authority and industry.

Why it matters

Leasing is central to airline fleet growth and capital planning. A competitive domestic ecosystem could affect financing cost, foreign-exchange exposure, legal services, asset management and the role of GIFT IFSC in aviation finance.

SCULTRA point of view

The opportunity is credible, but competitiveness depends on tax certainty, repossession, insolvency treatment, regulatory coordination, skilled service providers, access to long-term capital and a record of completed transactions.

Limitations

This was the committee's first meeting. The release does not announce a new rule, final recommendation, committed aircraft portfolio or completed financing transaction.
