Captive coal production grows about 5% through 10 September
Output reached 68.98 million tonnes in the financial year to date, while dispatches increased 5.94% to 75.68 million tonnes.
The Coal Ministry says captive-mine production reached 68.98 million tonnes through 10 September 2026, compared with 65.78 million tonnes in the corresponding period a year earlier. Dispatches rose 5.94% to 75.68 million tonnes.
Captive and commercial mines produced about 210 million tonnes in FY2025-26, representing roughly 21% of domestic coal output. Nine mines with combined peak capacity of 20.67 million tonnes are expected to begin production in FY2026-27, and three have already started.

Captive and commercial supply affects fuel availability, industrial input costs and reliance on imported coal.

Production resilience is commercially relevant, but the figures should be assessed alongside demand, inventories, transport, quality, safety and environmental performance.
Limitations
The current-year data is provisional and ministry-reported. Expected mine starts and the forecast of more than 228 million tonnes for the segment are not realised output.
