DoT warns that IMEI tampering can mean prison and a ₹50 lakh fine
The telecom department has reiterated the penalties for altering or misusing device and subscriber identifiers.
The Department of Telecommunications has cautioned citizens against tampering with International Mobile Equipment Identity numbers or using devices with unauthorised or altered telecom identifiers.
DoT cited sections 42(3)(c) and 42(3)(e) of the Telecommunications Act, 2023. It said violations may attract imprisonment for up to three years, a fine of up to ₹50 lakh, or both, and that abetment can attract the same punishment.

Reliable device identifiers help networks and authorities trace fraud, block stolen handsets and protect the integrity of telecom systems.
